Hi! My name is Risa. I’m a passionate Yoga teacher and a dedicated Yoga student, looking to deepen my training and help you explore the relationship between Yoga and Ayurveda.
My mission is to bring Yoga to more people, not just as a physical practice, but incorporating the philosophical and spiritual elements of Yoga in more digestible ways.
Alongside, I want to bring Ayurveda to more people and teach them how they can incorporate Yoga and Ayurveda together into their daily lives.
I want to offer you the opportunity to experience the combination of Yoga & Ayurveda and the positive changes this can bring to your physical and mental well being.
By supporting me in deepening my knowledge and training, I in turn would love to help you do the same. Whatever the reasons that take you to your Yoga mat, I want you to be able to feel the same benefits as I do.
To do this I have put together a range of rewards for helping me. Please have a look and if you are able to do so, join me on our journey towards a healthier, happier future!
My Yoga Journey
I started Yoga from a broken place.
Many people practice Yoga as a physical practice. This was true for me when I first started practicing Yoga over 10 years ago.
I wasn’t enjoying my job and I was in the middle of an abusive relationship.
Yoga class was where I could escape, be myself, let everything go and recharge. It created the space for me to learn Yoga philosophy, practice deeper and turn my life upside down.
I had been practising on and off for the first 5 years and then in 2013, I decided to take Yoga to the next level, practicing 2-3 times a week in a local Yoga studio.
From student to teacher
My next step was to make the transition from student to teacher. I enrolled onto a Yoga teacher training course in April 2014 and everything changed.
After completing an intensive Yoga teacher training course, I received my certification from my Yoga school. I was officially a qualified Yoga teacher. But this was just the start.
Little did I know at the time that it meant much more than just becoming a teacher and instead, I was embarking on the long journey to finding my true-self and my true life purpose.
The biggest accomplishment after completing my Yoga teacher training was to quit smoking. I’d been a heavy smoker since a teenager and continued to smoke to relieve stress and remove the sense of emptiness. Yoga really helped me look at my life from a different perspective and showed me that I didn’t need to rely on cigarettes to feel happier in my life.
Over the past 4 years, I’ve been back and forth with different personal development tools such as EFT, NLP and coaching but I always come back to Yoga as the tool to heal my mind and body.
And now back to student!
After 4 years of exploring different avenues in my life, I am ready to embark on a new journey and I need your help!
In March 2019, I am traveling to Rishikesh, India to participate in an advanced 100 Hour Yoga teacher training course – to further study Yoga and its relationship with Ayurveda.
What is Ayurveda and how does it relate to yoga?
Ayurveda is known as a sister science of Yoga, and is a type of alternative and complementary medicine that originated in India and can be traced back to 5,000 BC. The word Ayurveda means “The Science of Life” in Sanskrit.
Ayurveda focuses on maintaining a physically and emotionally balanced state by living in harmony with nature and eating specific foods and maintaining a lifestyle according to the season and that is unique to the individual.
While Yoga focus on physical practice, meditation and breathing exercises to re-balance your body and mind, Ayurveda focuses on eating the right food and maintaining a lifestyle unique to your mind-body type, which is called a “dosha” in Sanskrit, to bring your body and mind back to balanced state.
Ayurveda is widely practiced on the Indian subcontinent. According to the University of Minnesota’s Center for Spirituality & Healing, more than 90 percent of Indian nationals use some form of Ayurvedic medicine.
I first discovered Ayurveda while researching my first Yoga Teacher Training back in 2013. Back then, I knew little about Ayurveda but I was fascinated by Ayurvedic way of cleansing your body and how to heal your body with food.
I have suffered from eczema since I was little. My eczema tends to flare up when I am stressed and burnt out. Although Yoga really helps me relieve stress and calms my mind, as well as strengthens my body and mind, my eczema didn’t go away and although these days my eczema is mild, I am living in fear of “what if my intense eczema returns again”.
So this year, I decided to consult with a Ayurveda consultant to find out my imbalances and how I can integrate Ayurveda into my daily life. I found her through my one of my favourite Yoga podcasts, and I was inspired by her story of how she has successfully regulated her hypothyroidism using the wisdom of Ayurveda and Yoga practice.
It has been a real eye opener for me and I can’t stop learning more about Ayurveda ever since!
The big bonus is that I love food and cooking, which can be therapeutic in its own right!
