Bailey has always loved dance but was, for a long time, too shy to take lessons. Not so many boys do Ballet and we didn't know where to go? Particularly as we had moved from South London to Sussex. Finally, aged nearly 12, Bailey went to try out at the amazing Gielgud Academy of Performing Arts in Sussex. He took his first ever Ballet lesson on 27th September 2014. Fast forward not so far to today and he has just received Gielgud Academy's 'David Wall scholarship for Ballet' in recognition of his talent (for the academic year 2016-2017) and he goes forward into Grade 4 and Grade 5 classes in September. He recently auditioned for the English Youth Ballet's upcoming production of Swan Lake and has been offered a place where he will train and perform alongside their principle dancers (and some other very happy young local ballet dancers!)

bz-cropWe are fundraising for the training and costume costs of this programme.

We are also fundraising to support current accrued costs and for training in other genres in the coming year.

Ballet training is expensive and we are currently in financial difficulties, but Bailey is brilliant: as one of the faculty at Gielgud Academy, Michael Kopinski says "he has made such tremendous progress and his work ethic has been exemplary". Dame Beryl Grey (non-dance geeks google her!) also spotted him, after seeing him perform last weekend, and said he is really good! So it's a no brainer. We are doing what we can to help him realise his dream of becoming a professional dancer and to support opportunity, inclusion and diversity in the genre. Because when financial, social and cultural barriers are removed (meaning anyone can do it) everyone wins!

We share the vision of Cassa Pancho, founder of Ballet Black, a professional ballet company for international dancers of black and Asian descent, when she says "Our ultimate goal is to see a fundamental change in the number of black and Asian dancers in mainstream ballet companies.."

FAQ: Can I see more pictures? (what, you mean apart from my rubbish ones?) and perhaps a video?  Yes! Sure thing! Coming soon!

But here is the conundrum, as a Mother, how do I support him and promote him without over exposing him on the internet.... he is still a kid and this is no Kardashian/Bieber moment... I can't control the use/spread of content on the internet so please forgive me if I don't update with tonnes of extra information and a gallery of up close and personal images :-)
