“Comraich”, Gaelic for ‘Sanctuary’ is a 14 acre parcel of land in the stunningly beautiful mid-Argyll on the west coast of Scotland, including meadow, native woodland, pasture, organic vegetable garden and surrounded by the River Add. There is a main house, holiday cottage and several outbuildings.
Our vision is to develop this Natural Sanctuary to increasingly promote and protect the wonderful biodiversity of the area and welcome people from all walks of life to connect and experience this wild natural environment. Wildlife includes otters, pine martins, owls, red squirrels, red deer and a wide range of bird life including Golden Eagles. Salmon and Trout flourish in the river. There is a profound need for places of sanctuary in today’s world, and we are very fortunate to be guardians of this vision and stewards of this precious land.
We have many exciting plans to develop the organic vegetable garden, to restore a previous wild flower meadow, create pathways and resting places in the woodland, and offer foraging and plant identification events. We have already hosted over 200 guests and several seminars, and have been awarded a Dark Skies certificate (no light pollution!) and a Silver Award from the Green Tourism association. Many friends, supporters and volunteers have helped us along the way.
The imminent departure of one of the two founding members creates a need for us to move to the next stage of our development. We need a person or persons to come and live here who can help manage and promote this sanctuary in line with permaculture principles of caring for the earth, welcoming people, promoting diversity and conserving energy.
Therefore, our priority is to insulate and renovate our static caravan to provide a warm, dry and comfortable home to accommodate whoever comes to live and work with us. We have started the renovation in order to make the most of Jay and Rita’s 6 month stay with us. Jay’s extensive experience and wide ranging skills make him the perfect person to be carrying out and managing this project. He is assisted by volunteers from different countries.
Our goal is to raise £6000 to complete the works and pay back funds that have been temporarily diverted from other projects.
Any donation or communication of support is extremely welcome. We also want this project to be a way of reaching out and enabling a wider range of people to connect with us and feel part of contributing to helping this sanctuary to flourish.
You can donate any amount as a simple donation, or as an exchange for the different incentives we are offering. Our incentives reflect the vision and ethos of Comraich and the local wild natural environment. They support the promotion and protection of the nature and wildlife here and offer you a chance to experience it and help it flourish.
We look forward to hearing from you and thank you for all your support.
