Hello Dear community, family and friends.
Recently I’ve made contact with and subsequently been invited to spend time in ‘La Jungle’, Calais helping a small efficient project to fabricate and set-up shelters for refugees. To do this, I need your support.
Like many of you, I too have been feeling helpless in regards to the global refugee situation, specifically those in Europe and more so for those stranded in Calais. Due to my financial and material situation I felt frustrated and resigned about my inability to help, until recently. Due to shifting plans, I ended up with an almost two week mid-December gap in my schedule, which I have decided to take action in. This is when I will be going to Calais.
The project: ‘A Home For Winter’ started out a few months back as a small crowdfunded project before their success led them to being recognised and supported by some much larger charities such as ‘Médicine Sans Frontières’. They will soon be expanding out of Calais. To read more go to www.ahomeforwinter.org
The exciting thing for them is the amount of time I have available – mostly volunteers are only able to come for a few days. A lot of energy is taken up training people anew. I have up to 11 days now, with the potential for another couple of weeks later if this works out.
The costs: Travel wise I will be covering most of the trip there myself, so it is only the day to day to and fro from the camp that I need support with. Currently it looks like the cheapest viable accommodation option is staying in the youth hostel in Calais where most other volunteers also stay. Breakfast is included in the youth hostel and lunch is provided on site, leaving me just to cover dinner etc. I am in contact with people who have already been/are on site, so I can work out how to keep everything as cheap as possible before arriving.
How much do I need: Apprx €550/£400 An early estimate breakdown of costing for 11 is as follows. (€60 travel there) + (€187 accom.) + (€150 for food) + (€60 to-and-fro travel) + (€43 misc) + (travel back to London €50) = €550. I will update this figure as I know more.
What I have already and how to give: So far I have been pledged £125 and a few people have offered support but not specified how much yet. Every little really will help. I will set up a box inside the entrance to the Strawbale House for cash etc or just notes of support. If you prefer to donate to my bank directly, please send me an email and I’d happily provide the details. Any money raised beyond covering me will be donated directly to the project itself.
