We are a small group of local people and businesses in Deptford and Greenwich, south east London. We previously sent two pallets of donated items for refugee children arriving on the Greek island of Kos in December 2015. Thankfully, the charity we sent those donations to - Kos Kindness - have confirmed that they have enough children's clothes for now, and so we would like to send our next shipment to Chios, where warm winter coats, snow suits and other items are desperately needed for refugee children arriving on the island.

Please can you help us to get the donated items to Chios by contributing to this fund for shipping costs? We are looking for the most competitive shipping quote. We previously used DHL's aid team who ship donations for refugees at cost price - but if we can find a quote to beat this, we will take it! We estimate we will need to raise £500 for two pallets to be shipped. That means 60 boxes of donations, and because we vacuum pack all the items, we can fit a lot in: 400 coats, 120 pairs of boots/shoes with socks and 450 sets of hats & gloves, along with blankets, baby gro-bags and sleeping bags went off in our last 60 boxes!

We have a collection and sorting day at Deptford Salvation Army Hall on Saturday 23rd January 2016 from 10am - 3pm, and two local cafes are also acting as ongoing donation points for us: The Hoy Kitchen on Creek Road in Greenwich, and Deli X on Deptford High Street. Please see our facebook site for more details, and also for details of how you can help out on the 23rd if you would like to come and meet us and get involved!

If we manage to raise more than we need to ship the items we collect, we will donate the surplus funds to Chios Refugee Support for their kitchen which provides hot, nutritious meals to refugees on the island and their rescue team who try to prevent refugees drowning as their boats arrive on Chios.

THANK YOU to everyone who has kindly donated to our fund for shipping. We are pleased to say we managed to find an even better shipping quote than before - so we can send two pallets (60 boxes) of donated items to Chios for £300 incl VAT. This means that any additional funds raised can be passed on to the groups assisting refugees on the island. We will donate half of the additional funds to the rescue team assisting refugees as they land - which is especially crucial, as in these colder temperatures increasingly people are arriving with medical problems needing immediate attention. The other half will be donated to the People's Street Kitchen. Only yesterday they provided a hot, nutritious meal for 1,400 refugees. Please continue to donate if you haven't already, as the teams of volunteers on the island are saving lives.

  1. Can I donate clothing as well as money?

Yes please! Please see our facebook page and website for details of drop off points, and also for details of our collection and sorting day on 23rd January 2015

2. how are you shipping the donations?

We are looking for the most competitive quote to send pallets of donations. DHL have an offer for groups sending aid, where they will ship at cost price, but if we can find an even cheaper method we will! We estimate we will need £500 to send 2 pallets, which is 60 boxes of donations. We vacuum pack the donations, so we fit as much as possible in each box. Last time we sent 400 coats, 120 pairs of boots/shoes with socks and 450 sets of hats & gloves, along with blankets and sleeping bags.

3. Where are you sending the donated items?

We have to be responsive to the changing needs of the groups assisting refugees, but at present we have arranged to send our donated items to Chios Refugee Support based on the Greek island of Chios, who desperately need winter snow suits, baby blankets and other winter supplies for children arriving there.
